Help, my dog smells! Where does it come from and what can I do about it?

Let’s get one thing straight: we only think a dog smells bad because they don’t smell like flowers, soap, and all the other things we humans like. Your four-legged friend, however, is probably blissfully unaware and thinks they smell fantastic. Unfortunately, they can sometimes carry some pretty unpleasant odours. So what can we do about that typical doggy smell? And when is it actually a sign that something is wrong? Let’s look at the different causes of a smelly dog and discover practical solutions to keep your dog wonderfully fresh.

What is a “normal” dog smell?

Just like humans, dogs have their own scent, caused by natural oils, micro-organisms, and normal body processes. It might not smell like roses to us, but for dogs it’s their own natural perfume. Still, there’s a big difference between a typical doggy smell and a dog that really stinks. And that’s something you, as a dog parent, can definitely do something about.

Natural scent vs stink: how do you tell the difference?

A natural dog smell can be a bit stronger after playing, being out in the rain, or when your dog is excited. This scent is primarily produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin, which produce oils that help keep the skin and coat healthy. But when the smell becomes extremely pungent, sweet, or “fishy”, there may be more going on.

The smelly culprits: causes of a stinky dog

1. Wet dog: a classic problem

After a walk in the rain or a swim, many dogs smell a bit musty. This is caused by micro-organisms that live on your dog’s skin and coat. These organisms produce compounds that dissolve in water and release a distinct odour. Luckily, the odour usually disappears once the coat has dried. A good dog shampoo can make a big difference here. Choose a natural, caring shampoo like Pawness Fresh Fetch, which helps keep your dog from smelling bad – without any harsh chemicals.

2. Skin infections: more than just a bad smell

An unusually strong odour can result from a skin infection, especially when accompanied by itchiness, redness, or flaking. Fungi and bacteria can spread quickly on a dog’s skin, especially when it’s already irritated. Dogs with allergies or sensitive skin types are extra prone to this.

Regular washing with a mild, natural shampoo like Bark Bliss dog shampoo can help keep the skin healthy. It doesn’t contain harmful ingredients but is instead packed with caring components that nourish the skin and protect it from dryness and irritation.

Does your dog have skin folds? Make sure you gently clean these areas to prevent a build-up of bacteria.

3. Ear issues and yeast infections: what you should know

Ear infections are a common cause of a strong, sometimes “greasy” smell. Dogs with floppy ears, or those prone to allergies, such as Cocker Spaniels or Beagles, are especially at risk. Ear problems often go hand in hand with itchiness, which may cause your dog to scratch at their ears or rub their head along the floor.

Notice an odd smell or unusual behaviour in your dog? Then it’s best to check in with your vet to rule out an ear or yeast infection. Regular ear care, for example by gently cleaning the ears, can help prevent problems from developing.

4. Anal glands: a sensitive and smelly subject

It’s not the nicest topic, but clogged anal glands can also cause unwanted odours in dogs. The anal glands sit on either side of the anus and produce a strong-smelling fluid that normally gets released when your dog poops. When the anal glands become blocked, the smell can be particularly sharp and very unpleasant.

Many dog parents first notice this when their dog starts scooting their bottom along the floor or licking excessively around the rear end. A fibre-rich diet often helps prevent this issue. If the problem keeps recurring, a visit to the vet is needed to have the anal glands emptied.

5. Dental problems: more than bad breath

If your dog smells, the odour may also come from their mouth, often caused by plaque, tartar, or mouth infections. Dental problems are very common in dogs, especially as they get older. Regular toothbrushing and special dental chews can help keep your dog’s mouth healthy. A strong, “rotten” smell can be a sign of infection, so if the odour doesn’t go away, it’s wise to consult your vet.

Tackling the smell: tips to keep your dog fresh

Now that you know what might be behind that unpleasant odour, let’s look at some simple ways to get your dog smelling lovely again.

Regular bathing: choose a mild, natural shampoo

With the right care, you can keep your dog from smelling bad. Choose a mild shampoo such as Bark Bliss, specially developed for dogs. The natural ingredients don’t just add a fresh scent – they also nourish and protect the skin. Washing too often can disrupt the skin’s natural balance, so bathe your dog only when it’s really necessary.

Dry your dog thoroughly

Especially after a bath or a rainy walk, it’s important to dry your dog properly. This helps prevent damp spots on the skin from becoming warm, moist breeding grounds for bacteria, which can lead to bad odours. Use a clean towel and, if your dog is comfortable with it, a hairdryer on a low heat setting.

Ear cleaning and eye care

Many smells arise around your dog’s ears and eyes. Clean your dog’s ears regularly with a mild ear cleaner and gently remove any discharge around the eyes. This keeps bacteria in check and helps prevent unpleasant odours.

Prioritise a healthy diet

Nutrition plays a major role in your dog’s overall health – and that includes how they smell. A balanced diet supports skin and coat health and helps prevent digestive issues that can cause bad odours. Foods that are rich in fibre can also support healthy anal glands.

Choose natural care products from Pawness

Pawness offers a wide range of natural, eco-friendly care products for your dog. The Pawness Care Collection includes, among others, Bark Bliss and Fresh Fetch shampoos, which not only clean your dog’s coat but also leave a fresh scent without using harmful ingredients. These products are vegan, cruelty-free, and specially developed to keep your dog healthy and fresh while being kind to the planet. Or go for the Bark Bliss or Fresh Fetch conditioning spray. This spray is perfect for refreshing the coat and caring for the skin in between baths.

When to visit the vet?

If unpleasant smells persist, even after a good wash and regular grooming, it’s a good idea to book an appointment with your vet. The smell can be a sign of an underlying health issue, such as an infection or a problem with the anal glands.

Let your dog smell wonderful with loving care

A doggy smell is partly natural, but with the right care, your dog never has to stink. Make sure you regularly treat your dog to a little spa(w) session with natural products like the Pawness Care Collection, pay attention to their diet, and give them all the love and attention they deserve. That way, both you and your dog can enjoy a happy – and odour-free – life together.
