How often should you walk your dog?” is a question many pet parents ask. As a puppy parent, you know your dog needs regular exercise, playtime, and chances to socialise with other people and dogs. But if you don’t have a garden, it can sometimes be challenging to give your pup enough time outdoors. Whether you’re busy with family and work or live in an apartment without a yard, it’s important that your four-legged friend gets plenty of exercise. Regular walks and active play keep your dog physically and mentally happy.

Why walking your pup is so important
You want the best for your pup, and that’s why regular exercise is essential for their wellbeing. But why are walks in particular so important? Here’s why:
- Walking, running, and playing can help prevent obesity or help your dog lose unwanted extra kilos. But walks offer more health benefits than just weight loss or maintenance. Your dog’s cardiovascular system and digestive system will both function better with regular walks; you can also improve joint health and reduce the impact of arthritis.
- Mental stimulation is just as important. Your four-legged friend needs new adventures to stay mentally alert, and discovering new places can really help. Walking also supports their mental health and can reduce unwanted behaviours such as chewing or digging, anxiety or overactivity, whining, or barking for no reason.

How far should you walk?
Nobody wants a “chubby” pup, but research shows that more than half of Dutch dogs are overweight or obese. Just like with humans, the health risks of excess weight are serious: diabetes, arthritis, heart and kidney disease, and a shorter lifespan, to name just a few.

What makes our beloved pups gain weight?
While overfeeding has a huge impact, a lack of exercise is also a major factor. Your pup probably needs more movement than they’re getting right now. In the beginning, it can be tricky to figure out the right amount and to make sure your dog actually gets it. If you’re looking for a good starting point, try 30-minute walks. It’s important to build this up slowly for a dog that hasn’t been active for a while. And of course, moving together should be fun for both of you. You can add more walks throughout the day or gradually extend the time you’re out and about.
Is your pup a super-active breed with lots of energy and a working-dog background? Size doesn’t always determine how much exercise a dog needs. A Jack Russell might need more movement than a Great Dane! For these types of dogs, treat 30-minute walks as the absolute minimum. It also helps to build in some playtime and training during your walks.
How often should you walk your dog?
There are many factors that determine how often you need to head outside for a short walk.

- Some dogs have a small bladder and need to go out more often.
- Smaller dogs may not need long walks, as long as they get the chance to do their business and move around a bit.
- Grain-free food usually means your pup produces less “number two.” Certain diets can cause them to go more or less often.
- Some dogs drink a lot of water, while others drink much less. How much they drink will influence how often they need to go.
- Puppies in the middle of house-training may need to go out more frequently for short walks. The same often goes for senior dogs.
So, how often you should walk your dog really depends on several factors. For most dogs, at least two 15-minute walks a day are recommended for toilet breaks. But many pups will need one or two extra outings throughout the day. These trips are in addition to the exercise they need from a good, brisk 30-minute (or longer) walk or active playtime.

Don’t forget the poop bags When you head out with your dog, don’t forget to bring poop bags. That way you can clean up “number two” neatly, and everyone can enjoy nature without pollution. Pawness poop bags are perfect for this. They’re made from cornstarch and are therefore 100% compostable. The poop bags come in a box of 8 rolls, with 15 bags per roll. That’s more than enough for a month of daily walks.
Regular walks and playtime have a big impact on your loyal companion’s behaviour. If you can’t always find the time in your busy schedule, there are plenty of alternatives. Whether you need someone to walk your pup every now and then or on a regular basis, there are several platforms that make it easy to find the perfect walking buddy for your dog.
