Losing your dog is every dog parent’s worst nightmare, yet it can happen to anyone. In the Netherlands, it’s mandatory to have your dog microchipped, but not everyone can read a chip. On top of that, the information linked to the chip isn’t always kept up to date. That’s when a dog tag with your dog’s name and your phone number becomes incredibly useful. If your dog is found, the person who finds them can contact you right away. So, having a dog tag made is always a smart idea. But how do you choose the right tag for your four-legged friend? That’s exactly what we’ll help you with in this blog.
What can you engrave on a tag?
Of course, you can have your dog’s name engraved on a tag. But there’s room for much more. Most people choose a dog tag with a name and phone number. After all, the purpose of a tag is that someone can call you immediately when they find your dog. But what if your phone battery is dead or you’ve accidentally left your phone at home? Some people like to include their street name and house number on the tag as well.
Do you often take your dog on holiday or do you live close to the border? Then it’s a good idea to add your country code to the phone number on the tag. For the Netherlands, this is +31. That way, you can be sure people can reach you even when you’re abroad.
In some cases, such as life-threatening allergies, it’s useful to mention this on the tag too. But how do you do that without making it look cluttered? You could choose to put this information on the tag instead of your dog’s name. Another option is to engrave “Allergy capsule” under your dog’s name. Then you can add an address capsule containing your dog’s allergy information.

Which material dog tag should I choose?
Dog tags can be made from many different materials, but not all of them are equally durable or hard-wearing. Plastic and wooden tags are becoming increasingly popular. And while they may look beautiful, they tend to wear out faster and can easily break during a play session with other dogs. Wooden tags often crack in half over time, as they don’t cope well with moisture.
Traditional tags are often made from stainless steel because it doesn’t rust and is easy to engrave. However, stainless steel is relatively heavy. That’s why Pawness dog tags are made from Zamak. Zamak is a rust-free alloy that is much lighter than stainless steel, while still offering all of its benefits. A Pawness tag has a diameter of 25 mm, which is large enough for both a name and a phone number.
Why having an extra tag is helpful
Do you sometimes switch between a harness and a collar? Then it’s a good idea to have an extra dog tag made. That way, you’ll have one for both the harness and the collar, and you won’t have to keep swapping the tag. Constantly switching increases the risk that you’ll forget—and that might just be the day your furry friend goes missing.
