What types of dog harnesses are there?
There are many different types of dog harnesses, but which one is actually the best? In general, we can divide all dog harnesses into two main categories: chest harnesses and Y-harnesses.
The chest harness has a horizontal strap across the chest. This horizontal strap runs over the shoulder and is attached to the chest strap. The Y-harness has a vertical strap that runs over the breastbone and between the front legs.
A third type of harness is the escape-proof harness. This is essentially a Y-harness with an additional strap that sits over the narrow part of the belly. This prevents the harness from sliding forward and keeps the dog from slipping out. An escape-proof harness is typically used only for anxious dogs who manage to wriggle out of other harnesses like true Houdinis.

The advantages of a chest harness
- This is the best type of harness if you struggle with buckle fastenings. A chest harness usually has just one buckle, making it the easiest harness to put on and take off.
- Chest harnesses are often labelled “do not pet” or “in training.”
The disadvantages of a chest harness
- The strap of this harness runs across the chest. If it fits too tightly, it can restrict the shoulders, making it less suitable for dogs that pull a lot.
- A skittish dog can more easily slip out of this type of harness. If the dog braces itself or moves backwards and the leash tightens, it’s possible to pull a chest harness over the dog’s head.

The advantages of a Y-harness
- The shoulders are free, which makes this type of harness better suited for dogs that pull more.
- Y-harnesses often have multiple leash attachment points and are frequently suitable for double clipping.
The disadvantages of a Y-harness
- A Y-harness usually has two buckle fastenings, so it’s not as quick and easy to put on as a chest harness.
- A Y-harness needs to go over the dog’s head before you can close the belly strap. Many dogs do not enjoy this.
- For dogs with a broader chest or a longer body (such as a corgi or a bulldog), the belly strap can sit too close to the armpits. If the chest strap sits too far forward, it can start to pinch and make the harness uncomfortable.
How to help your dog get used to a new harness
Putting a harness on your dog for the first time can feel a bit strange for them. That’s why it’s important to let your dog gradually get used to their new harness. The best way to do this is to show the harness first: place it on the ground and reward your dog when they show interest in it. Then pick the harness up and lure their head through the opening with a treat. This way, your dog builds a positive association with the harness. Start by having your dog wear it for just a few minutes and slowly increase the duration. Begin indoors and, once your dog is calm and comfortable, you can start with short walks. From there, you can gradually build up.
