Ready for the fresh air in just a few minutes: care tips for dogs in spring

Spring is calling, and dogs are the first ones outside! Nature is waking up, everything is in bloom, and the temperature is pleasantly on the rise. For dogs, this is the best season ever: new scents, new adventures, fresh air, and endless walks. But spring also comes with a few things to watch out for. From toxic plants to fleas and ticks, from pollen to contaminated water, your fluffy friend deserves a little extra attention in this season. In this blog, you’ll read all about how to prepare your dog for spring: from the first spring jitters to after‑walk care. After all, dogs enjoy themselves most when you are well prepared.

Spring jitters: enjoy and stay smart

Spring is a party for dogs and their humans alike. Romping around in the park, playing games in the garden, long walks in nature, and all those new spring scents make every four‑legged friend happy. But spring jitters also call for preparation. Because as soon as the season changes, new risks appear: insects, fleas, ticks, and pollen. The good news: most discomforts are easy to prevent with the right preventive measures.

In spring, young animals are born everywhere: think of kittens, bunnies, birds, and other wildlife. Cats sometimes leave their young in tall grass or bushes, and dogs that go sniffing around curiously can give the parents quite a fright. Animal mothers protect their young with everything they have, so keep your dog on a leash in areas where you might encounter young animals. In nature reserves, leashing is often mandatory during the breeding season. Taking your dog along on an outing? Check the local rules before you set off. That way, you can enjoy nature together while respecting the habitat of other animals.

Smart adventures: the Pawness walking collection

Always bring Pawness compostable poop bags with you. Letting your dog enjoy nature is a real treat. Just make sure you leave everything clean and tidy. Attach a poop bag holder to the leash so you never forget them again. And of course, a lovely walk calls for some snacks! Treat your dog responsibly with Carob Crunch training treats, made with lupin flour and peanut butter: plant‑based and wheat‑free. Or opt for Spirulina Spark training treats made with buckwheat flour and spirulina, also plant‑based and wheat‑free.

Spring hazards: ticks, fleas, and insects

In spring, dogs are more likely to encounter ticks and fleas than in winter. Ticks become active as soon as temperatures rise and hide in tall grass, bushes, and forest edges. Fleas thrive in warmer seasons and easily jump from one four‑legged friend to another. Do you have both cats and dogs at home? Then be extra alert in spring. Check your dog for ticks after every walk, including between the toes, in the armpits, and behind the ears. Preventive measures such as tablets, spot‑on treatments, or a tick collar protect dogs effectively. Is your dog suffering from irritation caused by fleas? Ask your vet which approach is best.

Insects also become more active as the season progresses. Mosquitoes, wasps, and other bugs can cause red spots, swelling, and sometimes an allergic reaction. Sensitive dogs are especially prone to this: think itching, bald patches, or skin irritation. Swelling after an insect bite can increase quickly. Does your dog experience this after a walk? Contact your vet. Sometimes symptoms disappear on their own, but if you’re unsure, it’s always best to call.

Toxic plants and pollen: invisible risks

Dogs sniff at everything they come across, that’s just what dogs do. But not all plants are harmless. Daffodils and foxglove contain toxic substances that can cause serious symptoms. Don’t let your dog nibble on unknown plants in nature and keep them close in areas with lots of wildflowers. Does your dog show signs of nausea or unusual behaviour after contact with plants? Go to the vet immediately. The sooner, the better. Dogs recover more quickly when you act fast.

Pollen are abundant in spring. Dogs show a pollen allergy differently than humans: no runny nose, but scratching, red spots, bald patches, or skin irritation. Sensitive dogs are especially prone to this. A handy solution: walk your dog in the early morning or evening, when pollen levels are lower. Do the symptoms persist? Then a vet visit is definitely worth it.

Spring swimming: take it easy with cold water

Does your dog love to swim and dive in the moment the sun comes out? Understandable, but cold spring water calls for caution. Muscle cramps or breathing problems can arise, especially in older dogs. Let your dog get used to the temperature gradually and don’t overdo it too quickly.

Also watch out for still water: it can be contaminated with blue‑green algae, microscopic organisms that produce toxic substances. Dogs that swallow contaminated water or swim through it can develop serious symptoms. On top of that, bacteria and pesticides can cling to the coat and cause irritation. Rinse your dog thoroughly after swimming or give them a proper wash, this helps remove all unwanted guests at once.

After the walk: a fresh and pampered feeling with Pawness

After a wonderful spring day outside, your dog deserves a true spa(w) treatment. Start with the paws: Pawness Cuddle Cure Balm nourishes and hydrates dry paws and skin and is perfect to use after every walk. Also check between the toes for small wounds or dirt.

For a quick freshen‑up in between, Pooch Polish dry shampoo is ideal. This 100% natural, water‑free shampoo refreshes your dog in no time while caring for the skin at the same time. No fuss, just a fresh pup. For a more thorough wash, the Fresh Fetch line offers shampoos, conditioners, and sprays specially for dogs. The combination of mint and lemongrass ensures your dog smells wonderfully fresh again, even after the most adventurous spring day.

Finish with a good brushing session. In spring, dogs shed more, and regular brushing keeps the coat healthy and shiny. Pawness offers five brushes tailored to every coat type, so you always have the right one at hand.

Spring is the most beautiful season to be outside together, and with the right preparation and care, you and your dog can make the most of it.
