Autumn is on its way! That not only means the leaves are changing colour, but also that our furry friends start shedding again. It’s the perfect moment to treat your buddy to a nice bath and a good brush to keep the loose hairs under control. A quality dog shampoo and brush can make a huge difference when it comes to seasonal shedding. In this blog, we share a few practical grooming tips for your dog’s coat in autumn and introduce you to Houndztooth’s natural coat care. So you can get your buddy squeaky clean in no time.
Dog in shedding season: seasonal coat changes
For most people, autumn is known for its beautiful, warm colours. But for us dog parents, it’s also known for all that shedding. Once the coat change starts and the winter coat comes in, you’ll find clumps of hair everywhere! This seasonal coat change – the shedding period – is simply your dog swapping their summer coat for a thicker and, above all, warmer winter coat.
Luckily, there’s a silver lining. You can give your buddy a helping paw through this shedding period. Below, we share some handy tips to help you avoid reaching for the vacuum cleaner multiple times a day

Tip #1: brush regularly
To prevent your home from being overrun with dog hair, it’s best to brush your dog regularly. And by regularly, we mean a short brushing session every day. After about 3 to 4 weeks, your dog’s new winter coat will be in, and you can go back to your normal grooming routine. After brushing, you can also run a damp cloth over the coat to remove any remaining loose hairs.
Outside the shedding season, it’s better to brush a maximum of once a week, as over‑brushing can actually increase shedding. Make sure you’re using the right brush for your dog’s coat type. For example, we have the wooden vegan brush for long, fine coats and the vegan wooden/nylon brush for short coats.
Tip #2: choose the right nutrition
A healthy coat starts from within. Make sure your dog is well fed and stays hydrated. Choose food with the right amount of fatty acids to support skin and coat. Many dogs benefit from temporarily switching to food with higher levels of Omega‑3 and Omega‑6 fatty acids. Adding a rich fish oil for dogs over their kibble also gives them an extra helping hand – or paw.
Tip #3: coat care in autumn
As with humans, a good shampoo and healthy skin are key to a healthy coat. During this period, fewer nutrients reach the hair from within, so the coat could use some extra support to stay soft and shiny. The Pawness Care Collection is perfect for this. The different shampoos and conditioning sprays are made with high‑quality natural ingredients that care for both your dog’s coat and skin.

De Care Collection bestaat uit 2 verschillende Shampoos en Sprays:
Bark Bliss offers an indulgent care experience for dogs with its shampoo and leave‑in spray. Both products are enriched with the calming scents of palmarosa, vetiver, and cedarwood. The shampoo is specially formulated for dry, itchy skin, gives the coat a beautiful shine, and is safe for puppies from 12 weeks old. The leave‑in spray, ideal for reducing tangles, keeps the coat healthy. Both products are vegan, cruelty‑free, and free from harmful ingredients such as parabens and SLS.
The Fresh Fetch grooming line, consisting of a shampoo and leave‑in spray, provides natural and refreshing care for your dog. The shampoo, enriched with lemongrass, peppermint, and spearmint, is specially developed to care for dry skin and eliminate unpleasant odours while leaving a fresh scent. It’s suitable for all coat types and puppies from 12 weeks. The complementary leave‑in spray refreshes and restores the skin’s moisture balance while spreading a pleasant minty scent, making it ideal for use between baths.
For those who love shampoo bars and want to reduce plastic for their dogs too, we also offer two shampoo bars from our own line. The Fantastically Freshening shampoo bar for dogs features the scent of peppermint, spearmint, lemongrass, citronella, rosemary, and eucalyptus oil. The Marvelously Mild shampoo bar for dogs features the scent of cedarwood, palmarosa, vetiver, patchouli, and turmeric
