Evening routine for your dog: from food bowl to brush in 5 minutes

A consistent evening routine helps your dog relax and supports a good night’s sleep. In this article, you will learn how to create a calming evening routine in just 5 minutes. We cover the final walk, serving food and water at a regular time, a quick grooming session and preparing a comfortable place to sleep. It is perfect for every puppy parent who wants to give their dog a calm and consistent end to the day. With the right approach, you will quickly notice a difference in your dog’s behaviour and sleep.

Why an evening routine works so well for your dog

Dogs are creatures of habit. They thrive on structure and predictability. A consistent daily routine gives your dog something familiar to rely on at the end of the day. They know what to expect and can calmly settle down before bedtime.

An evening routine for your dog does not need to be complicated. Five minutes of dedicated attention and a consistent order are enough. This can improve your dog’s sleeping patterns and support a good night’s sleep. Dogs who know what to expect are often less restless at night and sleep more deeply

Sleep is just as essential for dogs as it is for people. An adult dog needs an average of 12 to 14 hours of sleep every day. The better the quality of their sleep, the more energetic and cheerful your dog will be during the day. Healthy sleep patterns start with a calm, predictable evening.

Changes in behaviour, such as increased restlessness or difficulty settling down, can signal that something is wrong. Consult a vet if your dog’s sleeping patterns or behaviour change consistently. They can check for an underlying cause.

The final walk: more than just a toilet break

The evening routine starts with the final walk. This is important not only for the last toilet break but also for getting enough exercise at the end of the day. For most dogs, a 15- to 20-minute walk is enough to relax and wind down.

Walking also helps your dog release any tension or excess energy, making it easier to settle down afterwards. Try to head out at the same time each evening so your dog knows their evening routine is beginning. Consistency can make a big difference to how your dog experiences the evening.

Plenty of exercise during the day, combined with a calmer walk at the end of the evening, is a great combination. Not every dog has the same needs. A young, energetic dog will need more exercise than a senior dog or a calmer breed. Adjust the walk length to suit your dog.

After the final walk, check your dog’s paws and coat. Look for dirt, grass seeds, ticks or small wounds. This simple but valuable part of your dog’s evening routine can prevent problems from going unnoticed until the following day. It is especially worthwhile during summer or after walking through long grass.

Give your dog a little time to calm down afterwards. Resting after the walk helps them transition into evening mode. Enough exercise followed by a moment of calm creates the perfect foundation for a good night’s sleep.

Food and water: the right timing for a better night

Dogs sleep better with a satisfied but not overly full stomach. Serve their meals at a regular time, at least 2 hours before bedtime. This gives your dog enough time to digest their food before the night begins. A stomach that is too full can make it more difficult to fall asleep.

Choose a ceramic food bowl for everyday use. Ceramic is hygienic, easy to clean and stays fresh for longer than plastic. The handmade Pawness food bowls are available in white, grey or emerald green and come in sizes M and L. They are made from natural clay and glaze in a small studio in the Netherlands. A stylish choice that also looks beautiful in your home.

Does your dog tend to eat too quickly? A slow feeder helps slow eating with its clever shape and raised edges. This supports digestion and encourages a calmer pace. Eating more slowly can also reduce the chance of feeling bloated after meals.

Want to give your dog something extra special? The personalised food bowl has your dog’s name stamped into the ceramic. It is just as strong and hygienic as the standard version, but with a personal touch. A small detail that makes everyday mealtimes feel a little more special.

After the meal, fill the ceramic water bowl with fresh water. Make sure your dog always has access to plenty of fresh drinking water, including at night. The ceramic helps keep the water cool and fresh overnight. Exactly what your dog needs to stay properly hydrated.

A quick brush: good for their coat, skin and your bond

After dinner is the perfect time for a quick grooming session. Brush your dog’s coat for a few minutes to remove loose hair, dirt and early tangles. This keeps the skin healthy and the coat in good condition. A daily 5-minute grooming routine can also help you notice skin and coat problems early.

Another benefit is that grooming creates a calm moment for cuddles and attention. Many dogs enjoy being brushed when it becomes a regular habit. It strengthens the bond between you and your dog while giving them some gentle, focused attention. A lovely end-of-day ritual for both of you.

The right brush depends on your dog’s coat. The Pawness wooden brush is an excellent choice for long coats. Its rounded pins glide through the coat without irritating the skin. Made from FSC-certified beechwood, it’s a durable, high-quality choice.

Dogs with short coats will benefit from the wooden brush with nylon bristles. It removes loose hair while stimulating the skin for a healthy, glossy coat. Do you have a Doodle or Poodle? Choose the curved slicker brush. It reaches deep into curls and gently removes tangles without pulling, keeping even the thickest coat light and healthy.

For puppies, senior dogs or sensitive dogs, the Gentle Touch brush is the best choice. Its rounded metal pins are extra gentle and remove tangles without pulling. For short coats that deserve some extra shine, the Tampico brush is ideal. Its fibres massage the skin and create a beautiful, natural shine. All Pawness brushes are sustainably made and easy to keep clean.

Your dog may need a little extra attention during shedding season or in spring and autumn. Brushing regularly during these periods helps keep the coat healthy and your home free from loose hair. Five minutes each evening is enough to make a difference.

Need a quick refresh? Use no-rinse shampoo.

Sometimes your dog’s coat may smell less than fresh after an evening walk, even though a full wash is unnecessary. In this case, you can use a dry shampoo to freshen up the coat quickly. Use dry shampoo only when needed, and always choose a formula suitable for your dog’s skin. This keeps your dog fresh and comfortable without any extra fuss.

Also remember that not every coat benefits from daily brushing. Take some time to learn about your dog’s coat type and what it needs. Is daily brushing not recommended? Five minutes of cosy cuddles before bedtime is hardly a punishment!

How dogs sleep and why a good sleeping spot matters

Dogs sleep best in a familiar and consistent place. A clean sleeping spot helps your dog feel safe and fall asleep more easily. This can be a bed, cushion or crate. Using a crate as a regular sleeping spot gives many dogs extra clarity and calm around bedtime.

Before bedtime, spray the bed or cushion with the Pawness Dreamy Daze bed and cushion spray. This spray contains cedarwood, frankincense, juniper and orange. Spray from a distance of 30 centimetres, let it settle, and you are done. No harsh chemicals and no long waiting times. Within a few minutes, your dog will have a fresh, clean place to sleep.

Cedarwood naturally has antimicrobial properties and creates a warm, calming scent. Frankincense supports relaxation and peaceful sleep. Juniper tackles stubborn smells, while orange adds a fresh and pleasant note. Together, they create a clean and inviting sleeping spot your dog will happily return to.

A fresh sleeping spot is about more than scent. It also signals to your dog that it is time to rest. This supports healthy sleep patterns and makes it easier for your dog to settle down before bedtime. Small details, such as a familiar sleeping spot and a fresh environment, can contribute to a better night’s sleep.

Your dog’s evening routine in five steps

A good evening routine for your dog consists of 5 simple steps. Start at the same time each evening with the final walk, giving your dog enough exercise and one last toilet break. Afterwards, check their paws and coat for dirt or small wounds. Serve their meal on time and refresh the water in their bowl. Give their coat a quick brush to support healthy skin, keep it clean and enjoy a moment of cuddles and connection. Finally, prepare a fresh and peaceful sleeping spot with a spray and a consistent bedtime routine. Five steps, 5 minutes and the same familiar routine every evening.

For an adult dog, this routine can be enough to support a good night’s sleep. Young dogs and senior dogs may have different needs. Watch your dog’s behaviour and adjust the routine as needed. Is your dog still restless or sleeping poorly despite having a consistent evening routine? Discuss it with your vet.

Your dog’s evening routine is not another task on your list. It is a moment to enjoy together at the end of the day. A walk, dinner, a gentle brush and a fresh bed. That is all your dog needs for a good night’s sleep and a happy start to the following morning.
